Seahorse for Frederik by Arendse 2009
43.5 x 70 cm, smalti, copper leaf smalti, Sicis, ammonite
and glass fusions on board

About this series of seahorses Arendse says: “What looks a bit like a seahorse phase all started with the fabulous fusion that makes the seahorse’s head in Seahorse for Frederik. The fusion is made by my friend, mosaic artist Aimee Saic. Early 2008 her and her husband just got themselves a new glass kiln and was experimenting and having fun; and I was invited along too to join the party. Aimee showed me this fusion and I just couldn’t get my eyes off it and then she gave it to me as I liked it so much. All of a sudden I saw that it was a seahorse’s head and this mosaic and a few more evolved from that.
Seahorse for Frederik was made for my little son whilst I was still carrying him. Rather than knitting something he would grow out of anyway it was natural for me to make him a mosaic as his welcome to the world present from his Mum. I struggled to get the frame right and didn’t actually finish the mosaic before I got my own fusing kiln a year later to make the last pieces for it. The spread out inscription in the frame says “Til Frederik April 26 2008””.
