How to use the mesh.
The beauty on working on mesh is that you are not working straight on the final surface allowing you to make alterations if you wish. This means that you don’t have to make up your mind of where the piece should go before you start mosaicing. Another advantage is that you can work close up on a motif, say a bird, flower or fruit, and then cut it out and incorporate it into a larger piece. The Byzantine Tree is made like this, a number of fruits on mesh first, then they went into the tree on mesh, then the tree was placed on the board and the rest of the mosaic was added... You can also measure out a tile in you kitchen or bathroom and replace it with your piece.
Draw your design onto paper using a strong outline in felt pen or marker pen. Cover the design with cling film or thin plastic and place the mesh on top. Your design should be visible through the mesh. Draw over the design with a marker pen on to the mesh, simplifying the shapes and lines if necessary.
Use the PVA glue pen to dispense a line of glue to the mesh. Do not use too much glue. When you have finished mosaicing, allow the glue to set. The mosaic on the mesh can now be set onto your chosen surface (e.g.: a piece of board, a wall, a table top etc.) in the usual way: use a 3 mm notched trowel and comb tile adhesive to the surface. Fix the mosaic to the surface. When the tile adhesive has set you can grout your mosaic.
For exterior use: use EXTERIOR PVA VERY SPARINGLY in order to get maximum contact with end exterior tile adhesive. Fix with exterior cement based powder tile adhesive. Or better: work directly with exterior cement based tile adhesive onto the mesh. Avoid using pieces that are too small.
June 2010: The mesh is now BLUE which may show through transparent tiles if you use the PVA or if you don’t use enough white tile adhesive. For opaque tiles the colour of the mesh should make no difference.
